The Race and the Team

The Three Peaks Yacht Race involves sailing 389 nautical miles, running 59 miles and cycling 30 miles in a week – sailing from Barmouth on Saturday 19th June, via Caernafon to climb Snowdon; Whitehaven to climb Scafell Pike and finally to Fort William to climb Ben Nevis.

Helsby Running Club members Phil Gillard, Jackie Keasley and boat owner and captain Trevor Murphy will do all the running and cycling and also act as deck hands. Businessmen John Bailey and Richard Stone will sail the team’s yacht, Josephine –a Beneteau Oceanis 40 and one of the largest of the 23 boats in the race – through some of the trickiest waters of the Welsh, English and Scottish west coasts, navigating sandbanks, tidal streams, rocks and whirlpools.

Preparation, preparation .... and a quick drink

Tuesday evening, about a week to go and everyone has managed to find a few hours free to meet at the White Lion for some vital chat. Jackie has been very busy preparing a timing plan for the whole race and only one spelling mistake (so don't check this too carefully). Good job she found time to retire earlier in the year, said someone, but Bill is not so sure.

One hour in, everyone is present and a list has been made for the next round of drinks. There also appear to be more meals ordered than people at the table - but good to take on the calories at this point in time - other teams must be doing the same.
Now it's time to go outside for a team photo, just to prove everyone is still standing - see for yourself. By the way, it's Trevor, Jackie, Phil, John and Richard.
